LESSON 7 PRACTICE

DISABILITY THROUGHOUT THE YEARS

In practice 7 we had to make use of the CmapTools application, this application has been a resource that has helped me a lot; since to make the blog of the theoretical part I have used this application to make the schemes by myself. This practice was to make a scheme about the term disability and how it had been changing over time according to the different laws.

And finally we had to write the advantages and disadvantages of the evolution of the concept of disability.

This is the scheme we did about the development of disability.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES of the development of the term diversity
Advantages:
-      It is obvious that the advantages are more visible as schools organisation progresses.
-      By having those who have an advantage in the same classroom, they can push themselves and progress to be the best they can be.
-      They have the opportunity to socialise and form friendships with people who don’t have a disability.
-      In the classroom they have peer role models academically, socially and in terms of their behavioural skills.
-      They also have greater access to the general curriculum.
-      The end result so far is the social acceptance that they receive.
Disadvantages:
-      We first have to state that the disadvantages for disabled children were present at higher level years ago than currently. Originally the concept of disability wasn’t understood as a progressing matter, but as segregation.
-      As we said earlier, students with special needs were separated in the school from the rest of the ‘normal’ students. This means that they are only able to interact and compete who have the same ability as themselves.
-      We could also find the possibility that the centre won’t adapt and help the children in need but will expect them to adapt to the centre.
-      The situation of the separation of these types of children still exists and if, and hopefully when, these are joined as one, they must have the required resources in every school for every child.
To sum up and after doing a research we think that diversity is a very important subject in our classes nowadays because we won't probably find any class with people only from the same area. Nowadays, classes are multicultural and multilingual. These facts are understood as a bad aspect from some teachers.
From our point of view diversity is an opportunity to include in our classes cultures and languages from all over the world and learn together about them. That's why we agree with Gagnon (2012) who says that:
"Diversity and multiculturalism are commonplace in education, organizations, and all levels of public policy and government. The current paper discusses new developments in the psychological literature on the implications of diversity and multiculturalism for intergroup relations by considering: demographic diversity, national policies on diversity and multiculturalism, and (ideological beliefs and discourse about diversity and multiculturalism. After considering the nuanced effects of diversity and multiculturalism for intergroup relations, we consider the nature and implications of interculturalism, a new and emerging diversity approach that has received little attention in the psychological literature. We conclude by highlighting the importance of studying diversity across multiple levels of analysis, perspectives, and intergroup outcomes"
